The Mechanics: Part Two - Draft

By now the group has unanimously agreed with a game based from an amalgam of all our (good) ideas so far. Using Viral as a working title, it is a germ-themed domination game where the goal is to overpower and eliminate your opponents from the board. What keeps the game interesting is that certain areas of the board which we shall call "bases" aid the player that occupy them by giving them more pieces to work with. Such areas grant more pieces per turn as they get closer to the center; however this also adds an element of risk since your pieces are out in the open and somewhat at a disadvantage.

A lot of the minimal details are still a work-in-progress, however since I came up with the overall concept I did have a few unique ideas for implementation, such as:
  • Differing unit types. Virus is the default, Anti is a powerful yet slower (in terms of multiplication) piece, Cell is a neutral piece that defends the scattered bases and the Queen Cell guards the core base (dead center).
  • Use an Action Point system. This would have each player store a set amount of points that allow them to either move or attack. AP is shared by all the pieces as to give the game an element of tactics so the game neither takes too long to finish nor makes the players go too fast on the board, causing a potential stalemate.
  • Unit Attributes. If we stand by the idea of having differing unit types then pieces have inherent values that determine outcomes of attacks against other pieces. Otherwise we can simply go by quantity; whichever way this goes all the scattered and core bases will be protected by neutral pieces the players must take over.
We shall do some playtesting on a mock board and do further adjustments thereon.
